Ahmedabad : Shri Manoj Joshi, Secretary, Department of Pharmaceuticals, Government of India, visited the corporate office of Amneal Pharmaceuticals in Ahmedabad on Tuesday and met with senior company leaders to discuss the organisation’s growth, investments, research and development initiatives, product pipeline and expanding capabilities.
The interaction highlighted Amneal Pharmaceuticals’ contribution to India’s pharmaceutical ecosystem through its manufacturing footprint, investments in advanced manufacturing and R&D, and capabilities across complex generics, injectables, peptides and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). During the visit, Amneal also presented an overview of its global manufacturing and innovation capabilities, partnerships and role in supporting pharmaceutical supply chains worldwide.
A key focus of the discussion was Amneal’s expanded capabilities in biosimilars following its recent acquisition of Kashiv BioSciences. The acquisition brings together Kashiv’s biologics capabilities with Amneal’s commercial and manufacturing scale, creating an integrated global biosimilars platform covering research, development, manufacturing and commercialisation. The combination is expected to strengthen Amneal’s biosimilars pipeline and support its long-term growth in the segment. The discussions also explored India’s opportunity to further strengthen its position in pharmaceutical manufacturing while accelerating biopharmaceutical innovation. Areas discussed included increased investment in R&D, innovation capital, advanced research infrastructure, industry-academia collaboration and regulatory science.
These priorities align with the Government of India’s proposed Biopharma SHAKTI programme, which envisages an outlay of ₹10,000 crore over five years to strengthen and advance the country’s biopharmaceutical ecosystem. Dr. Parva Purohit, Senior Vice President and Head R&D, Amneal Pharmaceuticals, said, “India has a strong foundation in pharmaceutical manufacturing and now has an opportunity to add greater depth in biopharmaceutical innovation. The interaction also covered the challenges and enablers for the continued growth of India’s biopharmaceutical sector, including access to innovation capital, advanced research infrastructure, regulatory science and stronger collaboration between industry, academia and government.
The visit reinforced the importance of continued government-industry collaboration in strengthening India’s pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical capabilities, advancing innovation, developing an industry-ready workforce and supporting investments in advanced manufacturing and R&D.
