Centre to focus on blockchain research, cryptocurrency tracing, specialised training and indigenous investigative tools
Gandhinagar: Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU), an Institution of National Importance established by the Ministry of Home Affairs, has inaugurated the Bharat-RRU Blockchain and Crypto Centre (BRBCC) to advance research, education, innovation and capacity-building in blockchain, cryptocurrency and related technologies.
The Centre aims to strengthen India’s capabilities in investigating crypto-enabled financial crimes, analysing blockchain transactions and developing indigenous tools for digital-asset investigations. It will build on RRU’s existing expertise in cybersecurity, digital forensics, cybercrime investigation, cryptology, artificial intelligence and machine learning, dark web analysis, open-source intelligence (OSINT) and digital evidence analysis.
Focus on specialised training and research
The BRBCC will conduct specialised, case-based programmes for law-enforcement officers, financial investigators, prosecutors and technical professionals. Its academic framework will offer a progressive pathway from short-term certificate programmes to postgraduate education, Ph.D. and postdoctoral research.
The Centre will focus on cryptocurrency tracing, wallet and transaction analysis, illicit-finance typologies, ransomware-payment investigations, dark-web-enabled crime, virtual-asset seizure and evidence handling, anti-money-laundering support and emerging Web3 risks.
It also aims to develop indigenous investigative tools to strengthen domestic capabilities and reduce reliance on external solutions.
Building national capacity in digital-asset investigations
The Centre will undertake applied research in blockchain intelligence, crypto-asset tracing, decentralised finance, tokenisation and crypto-enabled financial crime. Its training programmes will incorporate case simulations, tabletop exercises, laboratory-based learning, transaction tracing, attribution analysis, fund-flow mapping and digital evidence preservation.
The initiative will also create opportunities for collaboration among government agencies, regulators, academic institutions, technology providers, financial institutions and international partners.
Complementing India’s forensic ecosystem
The BRBCC is designed to complement existing national forensic and cybercrime facilities by connecting operational forensic work with sustained academic research, structured education, multidisciplinary training, policy analysis and technology evaluation.
The Centre can support laboratories and investigative agencies through trained manpower, standard operating practices, research outputs, case-study repositories and practitioner-oriented programmes.
A multidisciplinary approach to blockchain and cryptocurrency
RRU’s focus on national security, policing, law enforcement, criminology, cybersecurity, legal studies and technology provides a multidisciplinary foundation for the Centre. Its approach will examine digital assets not only as a technological and financial development but also in the context of investigations, evidence management, regulation, public safety and cross-border cooperation.
The BRBCC will also seek to benefit students, researchers, government departments, financial investigators, regulators, prosecutors and legal professionals through specialised courses, workshops, internships, research projects and practical exposure to blockchain, crypto assets and Web3 technologies.
Through its integrated approach to research, training, forensic readiness and technology development, the Bharat-RRU Blockchain and Crypto Centre aims to contribute to a more secure and resilient digital-asset ecosystem in India.
