New Delhi: The Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team (SKAT), the premier aerobatic display team of the Indian Air Force, continues to stand as a shining symbol of precision, professionalism and operational excellence through its breathtaking synchronized aerial performances across India and overseas.
Formed in 1996 and based at Air Force Station Bidar, the team was established with the objective of showcasing the skill, discipline and capabilities of the Indian Air Force through world-class aerobatic displays. SKAT initially operated the iconic Kiran Mk II aircraft, from which it derived its name “Surya Kiran,” meaning “Rays of the Sun.” Over the years, the team became one of the most recognised and admired representations of the Indian Air Force.
In May 2006, the team was formally designated as 52 Squadron, “Sharks,” carrying forward the rich legacy of the erstwhile MiG-21 FL squadron. This transition further strengthened the operational identity and heritage of the squadron within the Indian Air Force framework.
A major milestone in the journey of SKAT came in 2015 with the induction of the advanced Hawk Mk-132 aircraft, licence-produced by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). The modern aircraft significantly enhanced the team’s display capabilities with improved avionics, superior handling characteristics and advanced smoke-generation systems, enabling more dynamic and visually spectacular aerobatic manoeuvres.
Over the decades, the Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team has conducted hundreds of aerial displays at prestigious air shows, national celebrations and international aviation events, representing the Indian Air Force on global platforms. The team has successfully performed in countries including the UAE, Thailand, Laos, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and China, earning admiration from aviation enthusiasts and international audiences alike.
Among the significant milestones achieved by the team are its participation in major editions of Aero India, large-scale public displays across India and internationally acclaimed performances abroad. One of the most memorable displays was the spectacular aerial show over Chennai, which attracted an estimated audience of nearly 1.7 million spectators along the coastline. In another historic feat, the team successfully conducted its first-ever aerial display over the Himalayas in 2026, highlighting exceptional flying skill and operational capability in challenging high-altitude conditions.
The squadron is currently commanded by Group Captain Ajay Dasarathi, an accomplished Su-30 pilot and Qualified Flying Instructor with extensive operational experience. Under his leadership, the team continues to uphold the highest standards of flying excellence while inspiring young Indians and aviation enthusiasts across the nation. The Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team remains a proud ambassador of the Indian Air Force, reflecting the spirit of courage, teamwork, discipline and technological advancement while strengthening India’s aviation legacy on the global stage.
