Ahmedabad : GLS University hosted an inspiring edition of “Decoded with Chandni Kapadia”, featuring renowned singer, composer and music director Shekhar Ravjiani, who shared candid insights into his musical journey, struggles, creative experiences and the experiences that shaped his career.
Hosted by Ms. Chandni Kapadia, Executive Director, GLS University, the conversation explored Shekhar’s early setbacks, professional challenges, family, friendships, spirituality and his enduring passion for music. One of the key moments of the interaction was Shekhar’s account of his early appearance on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, where he missed qualifying by five marks. Years later, he returned to the same platform as a judge. Reflecting on the experience, he shared his approach of transforming setbacks into motivation and channelising negativity into positivity.
Shekhar also spoke openly about his battle with left vocal cord paresis, which created uncertainty around his ability to sing. Despite being told that he might never sing again, he continued fulfilling professional commitments and underwent vocal therapy to regain his voice. His experience offered students a message of patience, hope and resilience.
The discussion also touched upon the people and experiences that shaped his musical foundation, including his uncle Jagjit Singhji introducing him to Ustad Niyaz Ahmed Khan Sahab, recording with S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, the spiritual influence of his grandmother and the Hanuman Chalisa, and the humble beginnings of his first studio inside a marble factory in Worli. A special segment explored the story behind “Chammak Challo” and Shekhar’s unexpected studio interaction with Akon that developed into a memorable collaboration. He also discussed creativity, remixes and changing music preferences among younger listeners.
The evening concluded with Shekhar Ravjiani joining GLS University students for the launch of GLS University’s Youth Festival 2026, accompanied by a special musical tribute prepared by the students. Through “Decoded with Chandni Kapadia,” GLS University continues to provide students with opportunities to engage with accomplished personalities and learn from their real-life experiences.
